I thought I would post a couple of articles on the Sultan of Sokoto – the most influential traditional leader in Nigeria. The first link is a question and answer session with the Sultan at Columbia University, during which he talks about a range of issues including Sharia, women and Islam, and corruption in Nigeria.
The second link is to a piece penned by Reuben Abati, which is very instructive about the Sultan’s royal lineage to Othman don Fodio and the founding of the Sokoto Caliphate. It is more light hearted and gives a good insight into the Sultan’s routine, personality and entourage. He is not as ostentatious as one might expect such a powerful figure to be.
