NIGERIAN AIR FORCE
Air Marshal Paul Dike hails from Issele-Uku in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State. He had his primary education at St Barnabas Primary School, Ilorin and then went to Ogbomosho Grammar School, Oyo state. Paul joined the Nigerian Defence Academy on 22 January 1973 as an officer cadet. He was granted a regular combatant commission into the Nigerian Air Force as Pilot Officer on 21 June 1975.
PROMOTION LADDER
Pilot Officer Paul Dike was promoted Flying Officer on 22 January 19 77 and became Flight Lieutenant on 22 January 1981. By 22 July 1985, Paul Dike was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader. Six year later, on 22 January 1991, he became a Wing Commander. He was promoted to the rank of Group Captain on 22 January 1996. Thereafter, he attained the rank of Air Commodore on 22 January 2001, the rank he held until 22 January 2004 when he was elevated to the rank of Air Vice Marshal.
The 15th Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) was promoted to Air Marshal on 30 May 2006, the same day he was appointed CAS.
COURSES ATTENDED
Air Marshal Dike attended several courses at home and abroad. Some of these include, Primary Flying Training at 301 Flying Training School, Kaduna on the Piaggio and Bulldog Aircraft and thereafter proceeded to Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma in the United States for the Undergraduate Pilot Training.
Subsequently, he went back for the Instructor Pilot Training at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, Alabama, USA. The Chief of the Air Staff also attended the MB -339 Tactical Conversion Course and the L-39 Tactical Recurrency Training in Italy and Czechoslovakia respectively. Thereafter, he proceeded to National War College, Abuja. Air Marshal Dike has flown several combat aircraft in the Nigerian Air Force inventory and abroad. Some of these include, Piaggio, Bulldog, Cessna, T-37 Jet Trainer, T-38 Super Sonic, Mig 15, Mig 17, Mig 21, L-29, L-39, MB-339, and the Alpha Jet.
APPOINTMENTS HELD
Air Marshal Paul Dike has held several appointments. He was the Staff Officer (1) Operations, Headquarters, Tactical Air Command. Later, he became an Instructor Pilot at the Operational Conversion Unit of Mig 21, a position which enabled him to be involved in so many Armed Recce Operations in sustenance of our National Defence Objectives, Subsequently, he moved to 303 Flying Training School, Kano as the Chief Flying Instructor. Thereafter, he was appointed Commander, NAF station Yola and later deployed as Commander ECOMOG Air Detachment in Freetown, Sierra Leone. On completion of his tour of duty, he moved to Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji as a Directing Staff.
Air Marshal Dike was also the Commander, National Air Defence Corps and Airport Commandant, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. He was later appointed Deputy Director, Plans at Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force. Thereafter, he was posted to 303 Flying Training School, Kano as Commander. Subsequently, he was appointed Commander, Presidential Air Fleet. He was the Director of Operations at Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force and later moved to Headquarters, Training Command, Kaduna as the Air Officer Commanding. From Kaduna, Air Marshal Paul Dike was posted to Tactical Air Command, Makurdi as the Air Officer Commanding, a position he held until 30 May 2006 when he was appointed the 15th Chief of the Air Staff.
HONOURS AND DECORATIONS
Air Marshal Paul Dike is the recipient of the National Honour of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). He was given the most outstanding Air Force Officer award for 1996 and the Chief of the Air Staff award for excellence at the National War College, Abuja. Some other medals and decorations received by the Air Marshal Paul Dike include: FSS, MSS DSS psc (+) fwc. He also holds a Masters Degree (Msc) in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan.

FYI the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike is the highest ranking Igbo officer in the history of the Nigerian armed forces, the first Air Chief Marshal in Nigeria’s history, and only the second air force officer to become CDS (the first was Air Vice Marshal Al-Amin Daggash).

You should understand that some parts of Delta state are Ibo extraction. I feel really bad that you don’t want anything good to come from the Ibo race.
Even his name shows that he is of the Ibo extraction and not yoruba. My mother is from Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government of Delta and my father is from Abia state, i have a better knowlegde of where the CDS comes from.

Good job to the CDS but i would have loved it better if he could base promoting senior officers on merit and not on sentiments. There are loads of qualified officers awating promotion, but the less competent ones get the promotion instead

I do not think u r being fair to ACM Paul Dike. Tell me 1 officer who merits promotion and hasn’t got it.
Also note that promotion exercises in the military are done by a board NOT the chief
He only acts on their recommendations and presents it before a presidential committee comprising the president’s rep, the Minister, the service chief in question, and he is expected to defend each and every one of the officers promoted or slated for retirement before such act is carried out
Then and only then is such officer promoted or otherwise.
He cannot and does NOT do it in isolation
Thank you Dotun for your response. But am not too sure if you are very conversant with the military. It is true that the CDS acts on the recommendations of the service chiefs however, he also summits names of people he wants to be promoted to the service chiefs and the service chiefs have no option but to promote them. The military is getting corrupt and political by the day. its becoming a situation where by if you do not scratch the backs of your superiors there a little or no chance for you to climb up the ladder.

With the wealth of experience, exposure and education you have attained, it is in your hands as the CDS to stabilize the country by insuring that the constitutional provisions of the country are adhered to by both the military and political class.
You are in the position to write your name in gold by insuring a better Nigeria of this time and future by liaising with the able president Dr. GoodLuck Jonathan to insure the unity and continued existence of Nigeria in the part of progress and unity.
Nigeria has been robbed by a lot of cabals who find it very difficult to leave power because of their shady past which they must use any puppet to cover by foisting them on us. It is your duty as a young man just like Jonathan to give him the necessary support to pilot Nigeria to greatness.
Leadership is taken in most instances and not given, but God has by his special grace given it to Jonathan. You should access the man as the no one eagle eyed security officer of the nation and see if there is any one in the presidential aspirants for 2011 that is better than him and more detribalized to take Nigeria to the next level and insure the support of a free and fair election. But from what we have, Jonathan is the best as he far outweighs Babangida and Buhari who cannot be trusted and who have once breached the constitution of the country by stealing power at gun point. They are therefore rogues and will remain so and so such people should not be allowed to rule this nation of decent people. You have been there and you know how it is in the west. I sometime wonder the insults and long explanations you have to make to your class mates all over the world when they ask you things about Nigeria.
So do not allow some people craving for power that they know not what to do with to cow our dear President Godluck Jonathan to compromise and leave this nation on the precipice of unconstitutional zoning, which will eventually lead to fostering one person on us.
We know Jonathan is good let him that God has given to us by virtue continue to 2019 with policies of development and progress for this nation. That will be long enough to create the necessary impact and put us on the part of citizenship and patriotism.
