Posted on July 21, 2010. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs, Politics | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

http://www.economist.com/node/16432882?story_id=16432882&CFID=143594228&CFTOKEN=87017455 Another insightful article from the Economist asking what will become of the Niger Delta anmesty programme now that a ‘local’ man from the Delta (Goodluck Jonathan) is the President. Since the amnesty programme last year, there is little news of what became of the militants that accepted amnesty.  Does the solution lie in getting [...]

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8680569.stm The latest in the long running saga of former Delta State Governor James Ibori is that he has been arrested in Dubai. It will be recalled that Ibori has been wanted for some time on allegations that he is wanted for massive corruption. He was arrested by the EFCC in 2007 in an incident [...]

Militancy in the Niger Delta: An Audience With Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi

Posted on May 11, 2010. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs, People, Politics | Tags: , , , , , |

I had the opportunity to listen to a talk by Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.  The Governor was his usual slick and charming self. After a talk on development projects and initiatives he has undertaken in his state, he took some (often hostile!) questions from the audience. Those who want to know more of Amaechi’s [...]

MEND Calls off Truce: Promises “All Out Onslaught”

Posted on January 31, 2010. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs | Tags: , , , , , , |

Grim news. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has declared that it is calling off its ceasefire and will resume attacks on oil installations. MEND promised a new “all-out onslaught” of attacks on oil installations. MEND was never officially part of the amnesty programme brokered last year by President Yar’Adua: http://maxsiollun.wordpress.com/2009/09/30/will-yaraduas-delta-amnesty-reward-armed-violence/ [...]

Will the Government’s Niger Delta Amnesty Succeed?

Posted on September 16, 2009. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs, Videos | Tags: , , , , , |

The federal government’s amnesty initiative for Niger Delta militants is well under way. Several prominent militants have accepted the amnesty (although a sizeable proportion of them have refused to take up the offer).  Militants who take up amnesty will hand in their weapons in exchange for freedom from prosecution, money (per weapon handed in) and [...]

Nuhu Ribadu Dismissed from the Nigerian Police

Posted on December 24, 2008. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs, People | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Finally, Nigeria’s corrupt Governors have got what they wanted. Their arch nemesis Nuhu Ribadu has been dismissed from the police, the corruption charges against them have stalled and they are free to now go and enjoy more of Nigeria’s money abroad in the UK, US and Swiss bank vaults. Amazingly a section of the Nigerian [...]

Mega Corruption – The Case Against James Ibori

Posted on December 2, 2008. Filed under: Nigerian Current Affairs, People | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Given the current controversy surrounding former EFCC boss Nuhu Ribadu, I thought it worthwhile to dig into the archives and let readers review this article published a year ago by Tell Magazine on former Delta State Governor James Ibori who was accused of scandalous corruption, and was being prosecuted by Ribadu until Ribadu’s removal from [...]
