Al-Jazeera feature on youth unemployment in Nigeria. Despite Nigeria’s fast-growing economy and rich natural resources, there do not seem to seem to be enough jobs to go around for the hordes of young graduates each year.
Demographics are not helping either. Nigeria also has one of the fastest growing populations in the world, which is set to double by the year 2035. Rising unemployment + rising population growth = big trouble ahead.
Not a single one of these mini, unviable states created by Gowon and co has what it takes to creat a single job. These states all depend on federal allocation of oil revenue which rightly belongs to the oil producing states. When you go out of your way to come up with some asinine formular for allocating federal revenue based solely on population, then you destroy the incentive for states to be creative. And corruption and waste figure in this formular also.
